Start menu problem

This is a weird problem; hopefully someone has a fix.

In some sessions, when I open the start menu, and I mouse over, say,
Recent Items on the right side of the menu, it will open up the sub-
menu, showing the list of recent items--as it should. But when I mouse
over any of the items, none become highlighted, and if I attempt to
click on an item, nothing launches and the start menu closes. This
occurs with _all_ the menu items on the start menu, including the
shutdown menu. This doesn't happen in all sessions. If I reboot,
everything will be fine.

Any ideas?
