Start menu short cuts gone missing

I don't know what i did but just about every shortcut in my start menu has
disappeared. I know the files / applicantions are still on my computer. I was
able to find them in the program file but the shortcut links are missing. Is
there a way to have the start menu recongize these files again and have them
added back to this menu?
