Start Menu won't appear

My start menu won't open from the Windows Start Icon in the taskbar or with
the Windows key on the keyboard. I've tried using the default settings for
the start menu and have also tried to use system restore to get to a point at
which I knew the start menu was working, no luck with either attempt. The
only way I can get anything to pop up is to right-click and switch the start
menu to the classic view (the classic view works fine). Any ideas for how to
get the Vista start menu back and working?
