my laptop is not starting

i get a black screen with the error code

oxc0000034 251/68746

the machine does try to self repair but with no success, it suggests
removing any devices that are attached, such as cameras or music players,
none of which have been attached.

have tried system restore with no success.

cannot get it to start in safe mode either.

never had any issues before with the machine, and am a bit of a novice.

any ideas appreciated

thomas

problem started after updating windows vista

I seem to have almost the exact same problem with my laptop.

I do not get an errorscreen with the code you mentioned but I get the option
to either self repair or to start windows normal. Nothing works.

Never had problems before with my laptop or vista and just as for you, this
started after my last windows update.

Does the repair enviroment allow you to open Notepad? (mine did, under
Advanced Tools or something)

If so, try this: Open Notepad (for UI fans, notice it uses some theme I've
never seen before, classic mode but with an office 2003 style menu to it!)
Click File -> Open in Notepad
Select My Compter
On your hard disk, right click and select properties
choose to do a disk scan, check all the repair options
it will ask tell you that a disk scan has been schedualed for the next
reboot.

In my case, this caused a whole load of permissions errors to get fixed.
