In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions fro
Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I trie
that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig.
unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operatin
programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had th
same icons. Maybe there is something I don't understand about start u
programs. Has anyone any comments on this matter. Thanks

You make absolutely no sense.

What "instructions from Microsoft's download site"?

How does Windows Defender speed up your start time?

What do desktop icons have to do with your start up time?

NO SENSE.

look in START/ALL PROGRAMS/STARTUP and see if you have any programs yo
think you can eliminate (right-click and delete). you wont be deletin
the program, just a shortcut. also check down near the clock to se
whats running. you can also look in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in CONTROL PANE
and uninstall software you dont use
and you can try this:'Download Autoruns 9.53 - FileHippo.com
(http://www.filehippo.com/download_autoruns/

there are a lot more things that can slow your sytem. not enough RAM
fragmented hard drive, viruses, etc

Hi,

First off, the icons on the desktop have no bearing on load time, except for
those that appear in the lower right corner next to the system clock.

Second, the best way to disable a program from loading at boot is to check
the options/settings/preferences of the program itself and disable entries
to load with Windows. Windows Defender and msconfig should only be used when
no other option exists, and the former will actually increase the boot time
if it is actively trying to prevent a program from loading at boot.

Third, slow boot times are often an indication of infection by malware. When
was the last time this system underwent full scans with recently updated
antivirus/antispyware programs in safe mode?

John Galt: My error. The instructions I followed can be viewed if yo
search "Startup Programs-Enable or Disable-Vista Forums"
It is my understanding that removing programs from the startup men
will reduce startup time. I may be wrong

John Galt: I don't know why my previous message teminated prematurely.
assumed that removing programs fromt the start up menu would also rmov
the desktop icons for those programs.

kword 88: Thanks for your information
