This may be the wrong forum, but here goes

I clicked on a Word file and MSWord failed to start. I was then taken
to the MS update site and I searched for updates.

I found two updates:
1 For the Power Point Viewer
2. Office XP Service Pack 3

Bearing in mind that my problem is with Word, and that my OS is Vista,
are either of these updates likely to help.

Thanks

If you have Office XP, maybe.

I am referring to OFFICE XP, NOT Windows XP.

OFFICE XP is not supported on Vista.

Office XP was designed for Windows 98,SE and ME.

Read : It may work, but it isn't designed to work with that OS.

Office 2003 and 2007 are the only supported Suites on Vista.

MS Word failed to start because you don't have MS Word installed on your
computer most likely..

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX100647101033.aspx

And if you do not feel like investing so much in an Office suite, you can
get the open source Open Office for free. It is not quite up to MS Office
standards, but it will enable you to open and work with MS Word files..

More than likely you don't have Word installed.
Did you install Office XP? If not, then Office XP SP3
does not apply to your situation.

As Mike Hall suggested, Open Office is free if you want to
do that. Personally, I feel the Microsoft Office Suite 2003
or 2007 to be superior to anything else.

If all you need to do is read Word documents and not
create them, then you can use the Word Viewer.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

There's also an update for Word Viewer;
http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/d...displaylang=en

Another update if you wish to read the new Office 2007 formats.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Lastly, there is an Excel Viewer and a PowerPoint Viewer

Excel Viewer;

PowerPoint Viewer 2007;
http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/d...displaylang=en

PowerPoint update;
http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/d...displaylang=en

I think about covers it.

Word is not part of Vista or XP; never was. If you want to read Word docs,
you'll need to install some app (such as Office) that can do so.

Assuming you have MS Word installed, it is possible the Office XP
update will help.
The viewer is for Power Point and unrelated to Word.
Note: You may not have Office XP installed, but the Service Pack
applies if you have any components of Office installed such as Word,
Excel, any of the free viewers etc.
It is unlikely you would be offered a Service pack if no supported
products are installed.
Reinstalling MS Word may resolve the issue.

Further questions should be directed to a Word or Office newsgroup:
http://aumha.org/nntp.htm
Post details such as exact message when word fails to open.

You have not yet learned to identify programs.
Office XP is a separate program that can be installed in Windows XP or Windows Vista.
Word is part of Office (any version)
If you were offered an update for Office XP you may have that software installed.
Now
Do your have a Word link in the START menu?
If not, you may not even have the Word Program on your computer. It does not come free with Windows
Vista.

If you can't answer these questions, it is time to hire a tutor.
