Startup to Desktop Then Nil Action

Hi all,
Can someone please help?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.

Out of the blue, the system has stopped working after getting to Desktop on Startup. None of the software will start, and I can't even run Control Panel. When I try to start anything the blank box on the screen is created but the software fails to run. Could it be RAM or Hard drive problems?
