Then you could check or uncheck the programs you did not want to star
up and run in the backround

The msconfig utility is still present in Vista. Simply type msconfig a
the Run command line to bring that up

That depends on which theme is being used there. Classic Windows o
Aero style by default. In the beta version of 7 the search line serve
for both there and still sees the msconfig utility. That isn't goin
away any time soon. :

In the search box go and write msconfig and press enter

You can also add the run box like it was with xp

follow these steps:
go to the control panel>Taskbar & start menu (ICON) > Start menu (tab) >
Customize (button)

scroll down towards the bottom of things you can add - remove from the start
menu and put a checkmark on RUN COMMAND

Hope this helps

With Vista, it's done exactly the same way it was in WinXP, except the
the location of the Startup folder has changed, and Vista has added the
capability of controlling Startup programs via Windows Defender.

As it's always been, in most cases, with "well-mannered"
applications, it's usually as simple as opening the undesired program
and deselecting the option to "display icon in the system tray" or to
"start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Start Up folder, and in the system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

This Knowledge Base Article refers to WinXP, but the same
principles apply in Vista:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310560

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.

To use Windows Defender, click the Orb > Control Panel > Windows
Defender > Tools > Software Explorer and select the "Startup Programs"
category.

Additionally, AutoRuns from Sysinternals is a bit more complicated,
but it'll provide the same (and much more) information and capabilities:

For a simple approach, get startup control panel (adds an icon called
"startup" to your control panel). Easy control of the reg keys and
other basic startup areas. No access to services for advanced users,
but great for basic control.
