Startup problems after 8/8/06 update

I am having startup problems after I installed the 8/8/06 updates, everything
seems fine except the task bar and icons will not load, just my wallpaper. I
am able to startup in safe mode and run check disk which temporarily solves
the problem until the next restart when the problem reappears. I used system
restore but when I tried to reinstall the updates the startup problems
reappeared. When I ran troubleshooter to try to identify the problem I lost
my previous restore checkpoints. After searching it seems that noone else
has identified this problem. I am using Windows XP Home SP2 and IE7. Can
anyone help. Thanks.

I exactly had the same problem, using windows xp professional SP2. After
spending days in cleaning, searching for trojans etc... I simply uninstalled
the updates with control-panel- add remove software. After that the problems
disappeared. So one of the security updates must contain a bug which reveals
itself on some computers.
