Startup problems

When starting up my computer it takes about 15 minutes before I can use my
computer. Is it possible that my starting up files are filty and how dan I
solve this problem?

Don't know about filty files but you can see if too much stuff is starting
when you start your computer by opening MSCONFIG.

Start > run > msconfig (in the box) select the startup tab to see what is
loading; uncheck the box for those items you don't deem necessary at
startup. (Make sure you really know what the program does.)

Hello Jerry,
To be honest I don't understand what you mean by" startup tab". I gather
that by "Ms configur" you mean the config. screen. So all in all I have not
yet figured out what you mean, but I thank you for yor quick reply. Marijke

What Windows NT/2k/XP/2003? A Server?= SBS/ISA/Exchange/Router?
If so, be sure that your local LAN adapter is on top of:
Network and Dial-up... -> Advanced -> Advanced Settings
-> Adapters and Bindings

If external NIC is on top: 5 - 15 min is rather normal...

You are supposed to click on the Start button, select run, and in the box
type msconfig then click ok. When the msconfig program starts you will see a
startup tab. Look down the list of programs and do I said earlier.

OR - ask a knowledgeable person for HELP - not online if you don't really
understand the answer.

Hi, before I forget... when ever requesting help ALWAYS list your system
info. include: Operating System (win98, win2000, etc), CPU / RAM (pent IV,
2.1Ghz / 256MB) Program name "if needed" ( IE, Outlook, ). Then describe
problem as you did. ok. Let's see if I can put what I've learned into words
that will make sense to you.

I know how fustrating it is. Everyone trying to help has a different level
of knowledge and responds based on that so some replies may have the answer
but if you don't understand what the hec thier saying.... it isn't helpfull
at all but rather more confusiing.

ALMOST FORGOT... WHENEVER TRYING SYSTEM CHANGES ALWAYS CREATE A RESTORE
POINT FIRST. THIS WAY NOMATTER WHAT HAPPENS YOU CAN GET BACK TO WHERE YOPU
WERE IF THINGS GO WRONG!

I'm no expert, well advanced beginner sounds ok" but i've been having
startup problems that make my system hang during the boot and I learned that
three different causes. if my sys doen't start right up I look for solution.
I can't and would never wait 10 minutes for ANYTHING, much less the boot
process!

1st - the order programs load during startup. (programs like antivirus,
mouse driver, etc)
2nd - a peticular starup program that gets confused and makes all else wait
while it tries to decide what to do.
3rd - I can't remember at the moment??.. (sorry) anyway...
ok.. for # 1 and 2
click start, run, type in MSCONFIG press <enter>(Run)
the program that opens has five or six tabs: "general, SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI,
BOOT.INI, SERVICES, and STARTUP.
usually the problems are found in the last one, startup.
for a quick test just unselect ALL itemsa in the startup, then restart. If
your sys boots right up you know your on the right track. immediately go back
and re-select all those items, reboot back to where you weere before the
test.

many times i find a line newly added with "RunOnce" or something like that
somewhere on that line. if you find one start with that, deselect it, reboot
and see???
learn what each line does while trying to fix your "slow" problem. start at
the list top and click start, search, typein the filename, search for it.
once found right click mouse for properties and if need be open an executable
file (thats one that can me ran, end with .EXE) open with a TEXT EDITOR like
notepad. by seeing inside you can often figure out what that program does
when it actuaslly gets loaded and consider if that seems connected to the
sysmptoms of your slow system. keep going down the list. eventually you will
probaby find a startup item that is causing the lag and doesn't really need
to be loaded anywqay so leave it uncliciked.
Whenever you have made a change to your system you should create another
restore point so you ca always get back to any point beforen you made a
change.
