I've recently "clean install" Vista SP1 Home Premium to replace XP on my
Dell Desktop; it's working but start up and shut down are extremely
slow. I have a new laptop with same Vista SP1 version but it's much
faster on power up and down.
Any suggestions to speed up my desktop?

By the way, I have CA virus program on the Desktop, but McAfee on the
laptop. One major difference between two computers is that I do have
MSOffice Bussiness 2007 with Outlook and using the outlook on the
desktop but I am using Windows Mail on the Laptop

New laptop, old desktop suggests that there may not be enough memory in the
desktop to give anything but mediocre performance.

What are the specs?

AV or other security programs can significantly slow down booting,
especially if you've enabled automatic scans at every boot. Other apps that
run automatically or do maintenance of some sort at boot will also slow down
the process. Unconnected network adapters can have extended time-out periods
while waiting for signals, which may also hold up the boot process for some
minutes.

Try visiting Dell for Vista specific drivers for your specific desktop model
And then how much ram is installed?

Chet--

I doubt your AV program has much to do with startup speeds since you have
similar AV programs on the desktop and laptop. However, the new laptop has
multicore processing architecture, and the P4 Dell doesn't. That makes a
difference.

Check on what you're allowing to by using msconfig and eleminiate everything
you don't need starting up. For example, if Office were listed at msconfig,
uncheck it. I'd leave the AV program on the startup tab of msconfig
checked.

You can also install a thumb drive to a USB 2 port on the back of your Dell
if you have one and use "ready boost" to improve your startup and shutdown
times.

Best.

As a gross measure, I would uninstall the A/V and see if that helps
(after a couple boots to finish the removal process). If it does, try
installing Avast A/V; it's free and the load is minimal. Also, make
sure you don't have Windows Defender running too. Two A/V's is not a
good thing.

Next, do some tuning. General tuning and elimination of services you
don't use can help quite a bit. You should eliminate any programs that
are in the startup area or startup reg keys that you don't need. You
can use Startup Control Panel to easily do that:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml.

For services, you will need to do start-> run ->services.msc. You can
get some more tuning info and some services specific information (what
you might want to shut off) here:
http://tweak-vista.blogspot.com/2009...ows-vista.html

Unfortunately they recently revised the above site and you have to do
a lot more hunting and pecking to find the valuable info.

FYI - there is a specific shutdown timer you can tune to reduce
shutdown time. See above. Also, if you have network connections,
shutting them down delays shutdown. But, startup time is usually all
about what specifically is starting up.

That should be plenty fast. You have software issues or serious
hardware/firmware/software issues.

FYI - XP is faster and has more features... I'd revert to XP.
