startup tool bar missing

please advise - all my icons are missing from my desktop and also the startup
tool bar, how do i recover them - thanks

Which Windows version are you running?
How do you think is the problem related to any Windows update?
When did the behaviour occured?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager
Select Processes tab.
See if you can find explorer.exe

If YES left mouse button click on it and select Terminate Process
then File-New Task(Run...) write explorer and click OK

if NO
File-New Task(Run...) write explorer and click OK
