static y screen displayed

i left my laptop turned on for a few hours. when i went back to restart a
green shaky screen appeared. after a couple of restarts the screen displayed
looked back to normal but now over the background display it appears like
there is interferance or static can anybody help?

This is a hardware problem indicating an issue with the video chip. Contact
the laptop mftr.'s tech support since you can't fix this yourself.

Malke's probably right, but before you send it out for repair, check your
vents to make sure they aren't clogged with dust, pet hair, etc. If there
are panels over the CPU and GPU areas, remove them and see how much build up
is in there. Using canned air, you can blow it out against the normal air
flow path. Do not tilt the can so liquid is sprayed. Make sure the power
cord and the battery are removed before doing this.

Is it under warrantee? If it is you should send it to for repair or
replacement.


There seems to be a problem with the video hardware or memory associate with
video or possibly with the display.

Try rebooting to see if it's intermittent.

If it doesn't go away, it's a indicator your laptop maybe headed for an
imminent video hardware failure.

You might try using the external display output (if it has one) to see if
the problem occurs on an external display.

If it does that would indicate a problem with the video hardware.

You might try running a memory test.

If it uses shared memory architecture (video uses same memory pool as the
CPU) and there's a problem with the memory you could solve the problem by
replacing the memory.

However I don't think this is very likely.

If it doesn't it indicates the problem is the laptop display.

If it's consistent problem, check to see if you are still under warrantee
and talk to your laptop manufacturer.

If it's not under warrantee, start looking for a new computer. I don't know
if repair is a good option, considering cost of part and labor.

As for transferring the contents of the laptop, you could buy an external
enclosure for the internal hard drive.

If the laptop remains usable (you can still see the display well enough to
navigate the GUI), you could retrieve the contents over a network connection
and an external enclosure may not be necessary.
