Status delay between Messenger and Yahoo contacts

Does anybody know why there is such a delay in the contact status of Yahoo
contacts in Messenger? I show Yahoo contacts available but they are not on
line.

There are still a lot of problems (running 8.5 Beta?) between Yahoo and WL
Messenger.
I have the same problem as you with contacts appearing online when they're
not and offline when they're online. Also I frequently get messages saying
my message could not be delivered when talking to a yahoo account.
I've reported these to Microsoft and hopefully they'll get fixed. You're not
the only one seeing these problems.
