I've gone through all the steps on 'dandemar' and still get access denied.
I've tried MS article 873148 enabling verbose and resetting registry
permissions and still nothing, and although it says to follow steps again if
it doesn't work, I can't because I can no longer loacte
%windir%\setupapi.log in the RUN box

HELP!

Sounds like time for you to manually download SP2 and install it offline.
You can grab it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Considering what you wrote about tinkering with the sub-system, you may have
problems installing SP2 even after the download. The likely easy fix is to
do a "Repair" install of XP, or to use "sfc /scannow" to replace basic
files. If you aren't familiar with either of those, post back and I'm sure
someone will assist.

Yep, the same SP2 applies to both Home and Pro.
