I tried that way back in my endeavors, thanks anyway.

None of the items of that kb worked except the one concerning manually
install individual certificates.

And I didn't try the last one because I can't do an in-place reinstall
because I have preinstalled wndows which only reinstalls windows to the
original and wipes out all existing work. I don't want to start from
scratch if I can help it.

I manually installed certificates to get ie7 to partially install. But it
still has problems because one of the subinstalls does not have a cat file
but still needs a certificate installed and I can't find it.
Also I can't be installing certificates for 500 updates. Something needs to
be done about my broken certificate install. Otherwise my only option is to
run without any updates.

Yes Phil, the choice is yours to either fix the problem or live with the
problem.

Long shot -
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true
See the above

Recently I had to reinstall a HP that became so corrupted it could not boot.
It was my choice to either fix the problem or walk away. I choose to fix the
problem for my neighbour even though it took quite some considerable time to
reinstall all programs etc.
