This is a follow-on to a post of mine on May 30. I reported on my
inability to install KB911562, which has to do with MDAC, on a PC
running Windows 2000 SP4. I described what had happened on four
occasions in great detail. I received the following response:
Sleepless,
Download Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8
Service Pack 1 (KB911562) from here :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7358DA31-959C-
4E3E-8115-51DC6D441365&displaylang=en
Save it to the Hard Drive, do NOT run it. Close IE and then install it.
That should stop the repeated prompt to update MDAC.

Because of extensive travel, I couldn't try this for several weeks.
Two weeks ago I proceeded to follow the above directions and stored the
file on my hard drive, closed MSN (I do not use IE.), installed it and
ran it. I followed links through successive windows. Then a window
popped up from the Software Update Installation Wizard. The top entry
was "Preparing to Install" followed by these lines:
Pending File Rename Check: Passed
Product Version Check: Failed, click here for details.
I clicked on the "Next: button. A new window popped up stating "A
recently applied update, KB911562, failed to install."
I had seen this error message every time I tried to install this
update.
That left me back where I started, with a critical patch not installed.
Since today is Patch Tuesday I tried again with the same results as before.
Is there anything else I can do, or will I have to reinstall Windows
2000?
