Still can't install MSN Live Messenger after 8.0 :-(

Hi there,

In February I posted a thread in this newsgroup where I pointed out that the
Windows Installer was never able to finish the installation of MSN Messenger
8.1 on my machine.

Original thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...21e04c52d5bab5

Well, so far I've been able to get by using 8.0 since this installs
flawlessly. Today, however, Microsoft forced me to upgrade to continue using
MSN Messenger, which obviously resulted in the very same bug that I mentioned
about 8 months ago. The installer copies most of the files and then it says
something about: "Writing system registry values" and then it simply stops.
It's not possible to roll back the installation from there.

I tried to install MSN Messenger in Safe Mode, but even using the
Administrator account I didn't have permission to install it!

MSN Messenger is a very important tool for me, so _ANY_ help, whatsoever,
would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

/DonRex.

Hi Don and Elle,

Sorry that the upgrade didn't work for you. Can you uninstall Messenger
completely using 'Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs' and then reinstall
8.1 clean.

You can download Messenger 8.1 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Hope this solves your problem.

Thanks,
AA - MSFT

Hey,

This still doesn't work. When installing it comes up with "Could not write
value to key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explore r\Browser
Helper
Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}"

I really don't know how to solve this problem so any assistance would help
please

Thanks,

Hi Elle,

I apologize that I am not able to nail down the issue here.
However, I search the browser object error that you are encountering. It is
possible that you have some adware / malware that is preventing Messenger
from installing properly.

Do you run any Anti-virus s/w? If yes then can you scan your system?

You can also try a free scan using the OneCare offerring:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

Please let me know if the above helped.

Thanks,
AA - MSFT

Okay, this is just so plain stupid that I have trouble finding the words for
it.

Having tried everything suggested here in this thread without luck, I went
to see if there was some kind of log-file or something in the install-folder
somewhere, and what do you know: In this folder I found that the entire
application had been installed! And it worked perfectly!

Now, the stupid thing is that the installer, still frozen at 99,9%, NEEDS to
do a complete rollback, so even though the application works, I am forced to
roll it all back. How clever is that!?!

I'm getting slightly frustrated here!!

I, too, am having the exact same issue. Installation of the newest final or
of the newest Beta both hang at ~99.9% installed. Cancelling the
installation doesn't work either - the installer still just sits there
forever. If I restart the computer, then voila, the new Messenger appears
and signs in just fine. I'd be content to leave it like that, but the
incomplete installation of it prevents me from installing any other programs
- it keeps telling me another installation is in progress.

Any new ideas, Microsoft? Is it possible that something is stopping the
installer from writing a necessary registry value for some reason?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark
