I followed the instruction: Download "Windows Update Agent ...". The link
to make that happen was given - I took used the link and checked afterward to
see that the program was indeed in my machine. It's there, but it made no
difference whatsoever. Before doing all that I had 23 failed attempts to
install KB 934238. After loading Windows Update Agent, I have tried many
times (6 or 7) with the same failure every time. Can't someone tell me how
to get that update installed? Glad to supply details if it will help. (HP
laptop, Windows XP, SP2, Home Edition.)

Thank you very much for the full explanation for the problem of KB934238. I
learned a lot from 51 - 58. And especially I thank you for including the
link to 51 - 58. There is apparently no way of finding 51 - 58 without that
link.
As I understand it now (thanks to MVP) ...
There is nothing wrong with my computer.
I will NOT be manually connecting to Windows Update again.
I WILL make sure that automatic update is ON (control panel - it's easy).

Nothing wrong with checking at Windows Update to see if the machine's fully
patched.

Your problem was due to faulty detection logic, apparently.
