Still evaluating Vista

Since I have a lot of people depending on me for advice I have been
evaluating Vista
for several months now.
Though I was not ready to "give it my blessing" I was anxious for SP1 to be
officially released
before I made my "final" decision.

I had a fresh install of Vista Ultimate installed on completely standard
hardware
(Asus, AMD, NVIDIA) but SP1 would not install. The SP unpacked OK...
and progressed to the point where a reboot was expected...then failed with
an error
code and a weblink.

The link of course gave non-helpful advice such as run sfc and chkdsk.

Anyway after trying several times and even re-downloading the service
pack...
I decided to format the drive and start over. This time I used Vista Home
Premium
but got the same results.

Now, out of curiosity I formatted again and installed Vista Starter.

Oddly enough SP1 installed just fine....not a trace of a problem.

Why would that be???

As unhelpful as it is, this suggests that a more advanced feature, not
found in "Starter", is incompatible with your hardware or drivers.

That is of course logical...
but I had no 3rd party drivers of any type installed.

The Vista installation was fresh and nothing at all was done to it.
I tried applying SP1 immediately after Vista's initial bootup.

Interestingly enough, though I never would have even tried Vista Starter...
from what I saw of it ...it appeared to be a perfectly good system.

the only way to give your blessing to vista is to do a exorcism

it was probably some difference in a driver version
that created such problems...

it seems to me that we will have to wait until sp2 for vista to react in a
expected manner and not do strange things

I think I'm putting Vista on the back burner for now.
Next time I do a major harware upgrade I'll probably try it again
