Still looking for updated with no other progress

Hi All, pls can somebody answer me when I try to look for new updates on
Microsoft Update, then I cas see progress of searching but it will not end
The searching can run all night and in the morning it is still looking for
updates ... No error message, nothing, Automatic updates are set for
automatic download updates and then notice me to install but this is not
working too ..., I have set default settings for IE6, added
https://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to secure pages with enabled pop-up
windows and it did not help. I have got WinXP, SP2, multilicence ...
Connection type: at work due proxy, at home direct line to internet. Thx a

This laptop is confused, Michael. If there's a proxy at work, or if WSUS
is utilized for updates there, then you will have to change some
settings to be able to access MU at home.
Either consult with the System Administrator at work, or, copy and paste
the last 20-30 lines of the WindowsUpdate.log that is located in the
WINDOWS directory (folder) into your reply so that someone may be able
to assist you.
