Thank you for your response but what I am asking is when will it be offered
the normal way? Just through WU? I don't want to force something it
doesn't allow me in the first place. It was my understanding that it would
be offered to all to had been previously denied once the driver
reinstallation issues were resolved. I see a thread from an MVP further
down that it would be offered on April 18. I am still denied. Anyone know?
TIA

Neither do i. I cannot see the sp1 in windows update. I have a hp laptop
copmpaq 6720s with vista home premium 32 bits. Following the recommendations
read in the forums, i went to the update driver page of hp for my laptop and
my operating sustem. I downloaded 8 drivers, for the synaptics touchpad, for
the chipset, for the analog sound device, for ligthscribe, for the intel
graphics, for ethernet adapter, for wireless modem, all of them more recent
than i had. I installed them , and when i did, the compatibility assistant
program for vista said to me that the drivers were not compatible and that
one of them, the chipset one, didn´t fit the minimum requirements¿¿¿¿¿?????.
So I restored my system to a previous point with my old drivers. When i
tried to update the drivers with the device administrator, it says that i
have the more recent ones for my computer. But the sp1 is not shown for me
in windows update. I would like to know what is the problem. How is it
possible that in hp update page the published drivers for windows vista home
premium 32 bits are not compatible with windows vista?, where is the
mistake?
Regards, Clara

You'd have to direct that question to your computer's manufacturer;
thats who would have to provide you with the necessary compatible device
drivers before SP1 will be offered to you via Windows Update.

My computer manufacturer has nothing to do with it. I bought the computer
with XP on it. It is not their responsibility to provide drivers for an
unsupported OS. It is Microsoft's responsibility to provide a compatible
service pack that doesn't break drivers.

Paula

go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343/

and check that your PC satisfies all the pre-requisites

the major cause of a lack of offer is 'cause 5' - in my opinion.

Are all your drivers up to date? Do you see one of your drivers listed
in 'Method for Cause 5'?

Good luck

Thank you for your response occam.
Yes, my problem is cause 5 which I have known for a while.
All my drivers are up to date or I should say as much as they can be.
One of my computers that won't update has the conexant problem driver and
the Creative Audigy 2 value problem driver.
The laptop has the SigmaTel driver problem.
I can find no solution from those manufacturers.
It was my understanding the Microsoft was to fix those issues but I see not.
I shudda just stayed with XP. I never had problems like this.

In your case, you are certainly correct.

You had a chance to see if your devices were ready for Vista (i.e.,
"would work with or already had vista drivers available from the
manufacturer") even before you installed the OS. Eiither you failed to
avail yourself of this application, freely available for download from
Microsoft, or you simply ignored the results.

Since you broke your machine's warranty by installing an unsupported
OS, the computer manufacturer is no longer responsible. YOU are.

Why is it Microsoft's responsibility to provide a compatible service
pack which doesn't break drivers?

This has never been their responsibility in the past, and until they
start producing the devices on your computer, it never will be.

Microsoft is NOT in the business of writing device drivers for each
and every device in existence. They would have little time for
anything else.

Microsoft already does a fantastic job of making its OS
backward-compatible with most devices, but they are NOT responsible
for OEMs who fail to provide Microsoft with compatible/updated drivers
to include in the Service Pack.

IF your machine was produced by a major OEM, they are probably working
on drivers with the Microsoft engineers even right now. However, not
ALL XP-compatible devices are hardware-compatible with Vista. If you
have one of these devices, I doubt seriously whether the OEM will
support it under Vista. In which case, you will have to replace that
hardware with newer, Vista-compatible hardware "out of your pocket".

Want to get Vista Service Pack 1 now?
Download the Service Pack from Microsoft Downloads rather than waiting
for the manufacturers of the devices on your machine to add their
drivers to Windows Update.

Then download any Vista drivers (if they exist) from the device
manufacturers themselves, rather than the OEM from which you bought
the machine.

Like everyone else does.

By the way, this is nothing new for ANY operating system, not just for
Windows Vista. Newer OS's tend to break a few hardware device drivers
from release to release, and newer hardware is sometimes needed with
newer releases. This is to be expected. It's happened with each new
release of Windows since Windows 3, that I know of.

Personally, I would not want to use a device which was produced
expressly for a previous OS in a newer OS anyway.

You are completely incorrect Sir.
I have been running Vista for over a year now and I DID run the Vista
Advisor prior to deciding to install the upgrade or not. Only my scanner
was an issue and I was ok wiath that. Why even make an upgrade if no one
should ever upgrade. I have had only minor issues and none of the Vista
drivers I had prior to SP1 were a problem. Only after the issue of SP1 is
there a problem.
I will have to address the rest of your ignorant reply later when I have
time.
