still the same old problem

I have been without this messenger service since Vista came out because I had
the problem where I could never get it to run.
I tried again today and was pleased to see a new type of loader, so I
thought maybe the old issues had been resolved.
But no, I have exactly the same problem. The program downloads fine. The
program seems to install fine. It does not auto run after install, does not
prompt me to reboot. Fair enough, so I go to the programs and click on Live
Messenger and lo and behold...nothing.
There are now 2 instances of messenger showing in Task Manager and I can
only shut one down. I will now not be able to reboot, only perform a forced
shutdown via the power button.
This happens whether with a new, clean install of vista or on an existing
install.
I have turned uac off and on and in neither situation does it work.

Where is it going wrong?

Greetings,

What you're describing can be typically a router deadlocking Messenger.

Reset the router (aka unplug and plug back in) and if that doesn't resolve it, try seeing if
there's a firmware update for the router at the router manufacturers website.

Thanks Jonathan, but we have tried around 4 different routers for other
reasons during the time I have been trying and none of them have ever worked.
My Speedtouch router specifically allows me to let certain programs through,
and this one is on the list and the router has the latest firmware. The
router gets reset quite frequently.
Also, my husband's pc and our games pc can use messenger quite happily.

Another issue. I followed your advice from another post, to downgrade to msn 7.

This gets me a lot further but the signin screen freezes permanently a few
seconds after I have put my password in and pressed go.

I then have the same problem whereby I cannot shut it down and I know my
laptop will not reboot.

I set it for compatability mode as you suggested and still nothing. I have
uac turned off and also tried running as administrator, but I always end up
in the same position, a frozem messenger screen and msnmgr.exe showing in
"services" (not in applications, however) and I cannot stop this service.

By the way, I am the same poster as Lin, it just signed me in on my other
account.

I turned all my firewalls and security issues off as best I could (I can't
seem to stop Windows Defender running) and this is the error message I get
after msn 7 freezes and I try to stop it using Windows own prompt.

Description:
A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

So, no further help forthcoming?

I have tried new routers, up to date firmware, clean installs, and still, no
running program but it still sits in task manager, and I cannot stop it
running. It still stops my laptop shutting down or rebooting.
