Someone stole my friend Jim's laptop recently and has been logging into My
Windows Live Messenger account and chatting with me. He knows it's stolen now
but is afraid to give it up for fear that he might be accused of stealing it
(yeah right). I would like to know if there is anyway MS or the Messenger
crew can help me help Jim with getting as much information from this guy as
possible. We can provide whomever with the police report, etc.

In some case, the police can assist if you can keep him talking long
enough...

Greetings Chris,

I'm afraid to get Microsoft to do anything, the police themselves will need to do the
contacting.

You can easily find the guy's IP address - just install Messenger Plus (an
add-on to Messenger - http://www.msgpluslive.net) and add the IPGet script
(http://www.msghelp.net/showthread.php?tid=64308). You will be able to see
the guy's IP address once he starts chatting with you.

You can then pass this info to the police. You might also like to check a
WHOIS database (e.g., www.whois.org) to see which provider the guy's IP
address is assigned to.

Hurry up as the guy can change his IP provider, etc.

Good luck!
k.
