I have just successfull installed SP2 after using the following steps:
1. Reinitiated the download via automatic updates (0 bytes required as
already there!)
2. Disconnected from internet
3. Closed as many icons in the system tray as would allow me to close them
(following suggestion on earlier post), including Trend firewall (which is
why I disconnected from the internet first!).
4. Unset a registry key set during diagnosis of driver problem weeks ago
(driver since removed) (KB Q256010).
5. Hit the install button and crossed my fingers.
6. Following reboot I was presented with:
a) the correct users (unlike last time) and
b) a question about whether to set automatic updates or not (didn't get this
question last time so machine must have STOPed before or at that point on
previous attempt).
Which step of 3 or 4 was the critical move, I'm not sure but all is running
happily now, and I don't dare set the reg key again (and don't need it again
yet)!
Hope this helps someone (or MS to investigate!).
