How to stop contact updates?

I'm not sure if this is a WL Mail or Messenger problem, hence why I'm asking
for help here as I run both programs? Most of my contacts say "Your request
for contact updates is pending".
I've searched everywhere to stop this. WL Mail "Help" points me to remove
the tick
on each individuals contact.... ie. the box is ticked next to the text that
says "subscribe to updates for this contact. Status: Pending....." The
problem is the tick/box is greyed out so I can't remove it. I've spent hours
searching/changing settings etc but this has me beat! WL Mess account has
info regarding auto updating contacts, but as far as I can see it is host
account specific only. Essentialy, as I understand this, all my auto update
contacts are going to get a request from me asking them to allow me to get
future contact updates from them. This is what I'm attempting to stop. Any
ideas?

in Live Messenger, when you right-click a contact, will the option
"Subscribe to Contact Updates" be greyed out again?

Many thanks....the mess tick was not greyed out and once removed partly
curred the problem ....... but only for those contacts who also use messenger
i.e. those with the head and shoulder symbol. When mess is set to show all
contacts, the same option is not available when you right click. If you use
'edit contact' the box remains greyed out and unusable either with or without
a tick. Getting there though. Thanks
