Hi, in the group policy firewall, u can add program exceptions. i.e
%ProgramFiles%\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe:*:disabled:msnmsgr
If you put this either on the computer or the user policy, it does not seem
to stop the app from loading. Any ideas please?
Thanks,
John

....Or you could just disable it using msconfig to remove it from the startup
list.

Why are you using gpedit?

Hi Edward,
MD does not want people chatting all day at his expense, so no messenger at
all is needed. I can stop the older versions using ISA and gpedit.msc and I
can also stop it in their firewall settings from loading the older app, but
this new version, geez, i just can't seem to stop it running. I have 80 pcs
to configure... also, after I add the entry to thier fw settings and run
gpedit /force, I can see it in the firewall policy, but it does not stop it
loading..Thanks for any help you can offer...

Hi,

Actually those are specifically for Windows Messenger. MSN Messenger 5 and above (and
Windows Live Messenger) have no GPO options or registry keys to stop it from functioning.

Hi Jonathan,
That's the problem, there is nothing to control usage in a corporate
environment. Do you know if and when tools will be released to stop it
running?
Thanks for your help,
John

Hi John,

I've been trying to push for them for years, as of last I heard there were no plans to add
anything specific to do this.

Oh well, then best we can do is maybe try to remove the application with log
on scripts? This one seems to remove it:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove /s
but they have to be in the local admins group.
Any way of leaving it on and blocking the sign in? Then It does not matter
if it's on or off.
I have ISA 2004, so I can setup a rule to block it maybe, but as it uses
port 80, I think I have to block the sites or ip address's of the messenger
sites. Is there an easy way u know of to block it, but still leave hotmail
available?
Thanks,
John

Hi,

That removes Windows Messenger (which has GPOs). That will no have effect on Windows Live
Messenger.

If you block messenger.hotmail.com in ISA it should assist. Although I've not tried it
specifically with Live Messenger.
