Greetings,
To stop Messenger from automatically starting when you log in to Windows (which I assume is
what you're really asking), just open up any Messenger window, press the Alt key on the
keyboard to bring up the menu bar, choose the Tools menu, then Options, then Sign In and
uncheck 'Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows'. Also within
these Options, you'll find the Alerts category which controls all the alerts including the
e-mail ones. Depending on how you decide to setup things, you may find those useful.
Also within Windows Live Mail, press the Alt key again, choose Tools, Options, then on the
General tab, uncheck 'Automatically log on to Windows Live Messenger'.
One thing you need to be aware of is that you won't get any e-mail notifications if Messenger
isn't running and logged in. Live Mail will still receive mail of course, although it will
have to check periodically. When Messenger is signed in, it will grab your e-mail
immediately when it comes as Messenger is notified.
