how to stop updates when I shut down?

Hi, Im having the same problem as a lot of other people - updates fail. But
how can I stop them attempting to install when I try to shut down? I am
unable to shut down the computer as it tells me it will shut down itself when
the update has installed - of course the update wont install!! Thanks
