How to stop WLM downloading my emails?

I recently installed WLM and signed in with my hotmail account. Everytime I
open WLM, it automatically starts downloading ALL my emails from my inbox
onto my PC. This is slowing down my internet connection, taking up a lot of
hard disc space, and raises privacy concerns as all my emails are being
stored on the PC. How can I stop WLM from downloading my emails?
Thanks in advance.

Open WLM and try going to...Tools / Options / General tab...
Uncheck "Send and receive messages at startup" and
"Check for new messages every xx minutes" / Apply / OK

In addition to John I.'s suggestions

- Many people prefer to have their email's stored locally rather on the Hotmail server(in the cloud).

- if this is a shared computer, the only way to prevent access to your profile, WLM and your mail is to use a separate Windows
logon ID and password protect it, though if one has full admin rights and/or permission-ownership ability to the pc your *.eml
files(can be accessed via Windows Explorer). WLM, unlike Outlook Express and Outlook which store messages in a single database
file, stores each message as an individual *.eml file
- if this is a work computer consider reviewing your situation with your IT dept or designated administrator

The only way to prevent WLM(for a Hotmail account) from downloading messages and storing them locally is to not use WLM(the message
has to be downloaded and stored locally to view the message)..ie.. use a browser to access Hotmail's web interface(hotmail.com or
mail.live.com)

WLM, regardless of its settings, will occasionally attempt(by design) to poll for messages. To alleviate, ensure that the account
is not configured for Synchronization and excluded from a Send/Receive(look in the email account's settings for 'Include this
account when receiving mail or synchronizing'

Receiving email and signing in are different actions.
Did you add Hotmail as a pop3 account?
Do you have any other accounts?

Another suggestion:
worked excellent for me:

First:
go to Tools / options / in the "General" tab and under "Send / Receive
messages" uncheck "send and receive messages at start up" then "OK"

Second:
right click on the folder you don't want messages in it to be downloaded and
on sub menu "synchronization setting" choose "header only"
Note that this step must be done for every folder separately. "it is bad but
will work"

Third:
Choose your inbox folder and in the columns area "right click" with your
mouse and choose columns OR on the view menu choose columns
and check "Mark for Offline" and then Ok
you will see an arrow beside the messages that is marked to be downloaded
later click on it to be removed and the message won’t be downloaded until
you double click on it.
unfortunately you will have to do it for each of the messages in the folder
you are viewing

Important note:
After doing so NEVER choose "Download all messages later" under the Tools
menu / Download later sub menu or else you will have to redo step three all
over again.

please try it and let me know.
Regards,
