I am trying to record DVDs from VHS tapes and would like to temorarily turn
off programs that run in the background while doing that. Is there a simple
way? As an example, sometimes the computer is running slowly & I find out
something like backup is running in the background. Thanks in advance

Hi,

Simple? No. Either exit the task from the system tray (if the option exists)
or use Task Manager to kill unnecessary processes.

Having to do VHS to DVD conversions fairly regularly myself, I may be
able to give you a little advise, but first I'll need to know a couple
things from you:

- What is the Memory and CPU Speed of your PC?
- What Display Card and TV Tuner/Capture Card are you using?
- How much free HDD Space do you have?
- What software are you using to do the capture?
- What software are you using to edit your captured videos?I'll be able to provide a better answer when I have the above
information, but here's something to work on:

- The faster your CPU, the better, preferably Dual Core. As much
memory as you motherboard can handle. Check my sig, and see the specs
I'm using (AMD 64 x2 4800+, 4GB DDR400 memory)
- A good display card is never a bad idea, but not too critical. You
should be using a dedicated Internal PCI (or PCI Express) capture
card. External USB capture devices just won't cut it, unless you're
willing to sacrifice too much on video quality. Don't rely on your
display cards captures facilities, if that is what you're using.
- For absolute best results, always have a dedicated HDD for capture
space. That way, disk fragmentation won't interfere with the capture
process. When I'm done, I move the file to a another drive for
editing, and then format the "capture" drive for the next session. It
may seem like overkill. but a good 250GB SATA Hard Disk is ideal for
this. I have two - One for used only capture and another for editing.
- Most capture cards come bundled with a batch of software that has
for me proven to be pretty much usesless because of the extra bells
and whistles usually included. I use a third-party solution to do my
capturing ('MainConcept: MainConcept'
(http://www.mainconcept.com/site/)). Their software is extremly lean
and as long as you have the correct drivers for your capture card,
then it will work for you. It is highly customisable and can capture
in various formats from both Analog and Digital sources.
- Adobe Premiere Elements 3.02 for Vista x86, or Adobe Premiere
Elements 4.0 for Vista x86/x64. This is a really good piece of video
editing software that is based upon Adobe Premiere Pro. Multiple
Audio/Video tracks are a breeze, and edits can be done down to
individual frames. Titles & Credits are also really easy to add, as
are DVD Menus. Records to DVD directly from you editing project.
Extremly user friendly for novices and yet powerful enough for even
the most demanding user.Turn off and close Windows Sidebar, and temorarily pause the Task
Scheduler prior to captuing.

Hope that helps!
