Stopping MS from starting the Update tool every time I open IE

I did an express install of the update tool that MS needed me to install, and
now every time I open a new IE window the update tool starts and wastes my
time looking for updates it looked for only seconds before.

How do I stop this?

My PC is set to go out and look in the background for these MS/Windows
updates so should be no need to have to do it every time I open my browser.
(Note my browser's home page is not update.microsoft.com)
