stopping task schedular

How do you stop Task Scheduler service running in vista all the buttons to
disable it are greyed and cannot be pressed. I have even tried stopping Task
Scheduler in msconfig but when I restart PC it starts up again - I
absolutely hate things running in the background like this doing checks and
the like without my say so and using up precious computing power and
overworking the hard drive and I want to just disable the task schedule
service - why wont Vista let me do this? - XP let me.

You could disable it via the registry, by changing the value of

'Start ' from 2 to 4 at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Schedule

and then rebooting.

Not sure what the full consequences of that would be, but if you'd like to
be the group guinea pig and report back on whether your machine did or did
not stop functioning, then I'm sure we could all learn from the experience.

i guess i would be the guinea pig here...after i saw the first posting i
changed that reg value and rebooted then saw the reply
nothing to report for errors

Thanks very much - no errors showing and I have just been in services and it
now says disabled which is great shame there is not an easy way to turn it
on and off rather than doing it through registry but maybe that will be in
the free download of tweakuivista.exe when it comes out ;-)

Where did you learn that little gem anyway?

That's a general trick you can apply to any service if you get its name via
services.msc

Also thanks to you and Seth for posting back - not everyone reports back.
I'd disabled a fair number of the tasks (hidden and unhidden) in there, but
there were a few I'd left running just in case. So I learned from the
experience too. I use task scheduler for my own purposes, so I wouldnt'
personally disable it completely, but useful to know that none of those
tasks are essential to the operating system

I think its only common courtesy that people report back especially if
someone has sorted them out.

This disabling the scheduler totally shouldn't affect the scheduling of
antivirus programs (updating and scans) should it? - I use AVG 7.5 Free
Edition.

Unlikely, since it probably has its own dedicated service, - but its's a
fairly radical change and won't be completely without loss of functionality
for other Windows features eg Calendar reminders, automatic system restore
points, background defrags etc. So only you can decide whether it's worth it
long-term.

Well I hate background Defrags anyway that surely overworks the hard disk
and hogs resources.
