"Storage" Folders and Active Ones

Windows 7, clean install here. Like another poster here I have maintained
for some time a folder structure that clearly organizes emails for easy
reading and management.

I imported my old OE emails only to find them trapped in Storage folders. I
don't seem to be allowed to move these folders into my active pop folders,
but the cursor gives incorrect status and implies falsely that this is not
the case. No move occurs. If I want the many emails still in their folders
to be similarly handled by Live Mail, it would seem I must replicate the
entire folder structure and drag the contents of each folder into their
commensurate new folder. This shows a bug in the cursor-status aspect, as
well as the inability to drag, copy or move folders out of Storage.

In a similar disappointing turn, mail rules don't work in order to move
emails to Storage Folders, either. That one alone if corrected would make
the rest above a lot easier to deal with.

Any chance of OE for Windows 7?

Hi, Norle.

Easiest question first...

> Any chance of OE for Windows 7?

No. The OE development team was disbanded years ago.

> I imported my old OE emails only to find them trapped in Storage folders.

Are you sure you're understanding WLM's Storage Folders? It has been more
than a couple of years since I migrated from OE to WM and then to WLM, but
this is how I remember the process: When I Imported messages from OE, they
came first into WLM's Imported Folders. Then I moved them - the MESSAGES,
not the folders! - from there into my newly-created Storage Folders. Now, I
can easily move messages (either individually or by selecting multiple
messages with my mouse and the <Shift> or <Ctrl> key) from one Storage
Folder to another by just dragging and dropping them. Or by right-clicking
on them and then clicking Edit | Move to folder... HOW are you trying to
move them? From where? To where?

> mail rules don't work in order to move emails to Storage Folders, either.

Rules work fine for me. Again, HOW are you trying to use Mail Rules in WLM?
If you tell us, step by step, what you are doing, we may be able to spot
where you step off the path. But just saying "don't work" doesn't give us
any clues for how to help you.

To create a new Mail rule, I click Tools | Message Rules | Mail. Then I
click New and create my rule in the E-mail rules tab. Then I click Apply
now, and this gets me to the Apply Mail Rules Now window. Here, I usually
click Select All, figuring that I may as well re-apply any old rules while
I'm at this. Then, for the Apply to Folder box, I replace the default,
"Storage folders", by clicking Browse. In most cases, I Browse to the Inbox
and apply my new rule to that; since I have 3 Mail Accounts, I have to do
this 3 times to cover all 3 Inboxes. (Remember, this is NOT OE, and mail
from multiple accounts does not all come into a single Inbox. By the way, I
use only POP3; I've never had a Hotmail or IMAP account.)

In my experience, having Storage folders as the default for Apply to Folder
is pointless. After all, Mail that is already in my Storage Folders has
already been sorted! What I want to do is sort the Inbox messages into
Storage folders, not OUT of those folders. I suppose there may be occasions
when I will want to move certain types of messages from one Storage Folder
to another, but those occasions will be rare.

After this first application of my new Rule, WLM will automatically apply it
to new arrivals in my Inboxes, so I seldom need to revisit this area and
manually apply the rule.

How does your technique differ from mine?

Yes....to echo R.C.
Recreate the folders in the email account(**if desired**) and then copy the messages(instead of move). Doing so will permit WLM's
Message Store index to be updated properly.

**If desired** = the Storage folder may be a safe location, since removal of an email account in WLM will delete the account, all
folders and all messages.

Depends on the version of W7 and the type of processor you have
to run it on...

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f...-28Win7QA.mspx

(Microsoft search for
"windows xp mode for windows 7"
)

<quotes>
Windows XP Mode, an optional feature of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions,
helps small businesses upgrade to Windows 7 by providing a virtual Windows XP environment capable
of running many Windows XP-compatible business and productivity applications.

Windows Virtual PC requires PCs with Intel VT or AMD-V hardware virtualization technology enabled in the PC BIOS.

When I imported my OE messages they came first into Storage Folders/Imported
Folder/Local Folders. I've deleted them and re-imported everything and the
location is the same.

One of the things Easy Transfer um, transferred were Mail Rules. They were
disabled (as shown by the red 'x') since it was before the message import,
and in the past it was a simple matter of reestablishing the relation
between the rule and the now-present folder (pointing to folder via the
editing of the Mail Rule). This at first appears to be the case in WLM, and
one is allowed to select folders in Storage Folders/Imported Folder/Local
Folders/Inbox and below; but when Applied the appearance of motions only are
performed, and not the actual moving of the messages-in-question, before
declaring a successful execution.

So it appears that Mail Rules only function when the target for moving isn't
in Storage Folders/etc. Is this the case?

I'm only using WLM for pop3. It appears that WLM wants to be both pop3 and
imap.

I'm trying to apply mail rules to the active Inbox, in order to save the
messages in the folders I have been prevented from moving to the active set.
Why should one be forced to replicate ones entire folder structure all over
again, when they should have been placed in the active folders as a
consequence of being Imported? Smells like old Outlook antics frankly,
though even Outlook allowed manipulation between pst files.

It would be best if the program actually told one when an attempted Rule was
invalid, if that's actually the case.

Attempted creation of new Rule, using Create Rule from Message, and pointed
to a folder in Storage Folders/etc., same non-function.

So it's a bug then. Hopefully it'll be fixed sometime soon.

[shudder]

Even though I've already tiddled around with WVPC in order to run a few
apps, I find it silly to perform such a thing - running essentially XP -
when I upgraded to the new OS. No thanks! Alas, I was hoping for full
functionality despite being in 64-bit mode. I suspect it would be best to
reinstall it all and put 32-bit W7 on this machine, though I've enjoyed the
swiftness-of-execution. Ah, the fate of an old tester....
