Strange behaviour when I close my laptop lid

Hi to everybody!

I´ve been running Windows Vista (Home Premium) normally since January 30 but
today a strange behaviour started to happen everytime I close my notebook´s
lid: I noticed that HD´s led kept blinking and, as I hadnt set my system to
go into suspend/hibernate mode as soon as I close the lid, I reopened it to
find the screen off but the power & wireless led were on as if the computer
was on (I´ve a Sony Vaio VGN-FS315S notebook) and I really think is on
because when I tried to wake up the system with no luck (no key woke it up),
I finally chose to push the power button and the system went into hibernate
mode (I have the power button set to do that); once the computer was off, I
again pressed the power button and the system came back from hibernation

The curiosity is that as I had pressed several keys to try to wake the
system up, I found several windows opened...so the system was working but the
screen was off!

Im wondering what the problem is as Vista is set to do nothing when I close
the lid of my notebook

Any hint?

BTW, I´ve experienced another problem since two days ago: Windows is unable
to show its Help; a window pop ups saying Windows was unable to download from
/ windows; have you experienced the same problem? is there a way to fix it?
