I have been using Microsoft Update to update my windows XP (sp2) software
running on a Dell Inspiron 1000 without any problems. All of the sudden today
when I tried Microsoft Upgade I received this message.

"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems
only.

To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh
operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/. "

Well imagine my surprise since I have validated my windows XP using "Windows
Genuine Advantage Program several times in the past and my loptop has for 3
years been a Dell Inspiron 1000.

Does anyone know any magic I can use to turn the poor thing back into a PC.
(It really doesn't like being called a Mac).

I'm in a box right now since I installed 12meg of update on my Desktop just
the other day so I know I need to update this laptop.

Thanks for your much need help

http://winware.org/de/browsertest.php
What's the shown there in the User-Agent line while accessing the
site whith Internet Explorer?

See also http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817144 - "Method 4".

Well, I tried that. Method 4 didn't work. Windows Update still thinks my PC
is a Mac.
Any other suggestions?
By the way. Where do I look for the User-agent line?

And the User-Agent line on http://winware.org/de/browsertest.php states
what?

Freudi,

Here is what I got on the User-agent line. (multiple lines)

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; AT&T CSM8.0;
TaxWise19.03[0001]; TaxWise19.05[0002]; TaxWise19.06[0003];
TaxWise20.00[0015]; TaxWise20.05[0001]; TaxWise20.07[0001];
TaxWise20.08[0003]; TaxWise20.09[0003]; TaxWise20.10[0004];
TaxWise21.00[0017]; TaxWise21.04[0002]; TaxWise21.05[0004];
TaxWise21.06[0005]; TaxWise21.07[0003]; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)

I am surprised to see Mozilla/4.0.

If this is incorrect, then how do I correct it?

I tried to look at other options on the page receiver from the broswer test
but alas I can't read German.

By the way - I downloaded updates directly from the Microsoft Update
website and installed 2 without any trouble. I also receiver 4 microsoft
updates via "automatic update" and these appeared to be installed as I shut
my system down last night. Rignt now I an receivieg Windows updates by way of
"automatic update".

Taxwise again? See the follwing posting/thread for further suggesetions:
http://groups.google.com/groups?thre...@microsoft.com

That's okay.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817144 - "Method 4" should help.

I have already tried that at your suggestion when I first started working
this problem. It did not correct the problem. Following the last statement in
Method 4, I restored the register to its original value.

Is there anything else to try?

Are there any indications that what was in the User-Agent line incorrect?

Thanks for sticking with me in this.

You've read
http://groups.google.com/groups?thre...@microsoft.com
already? The user there did have the same problem and did have the
"TaxWise" entries in the User-Agent header also.

> Are there any indications that what was in the User-Agent line incorrect?

Yes, the "TaxWise" shouldn't be there and the "AT&T CSM8.0"
neither.

Thanks. Now I'm going to ask a dumb question.

Why, after having that software on my computer for well over a year, should
I just now be having this trouble?

I can remove Taxwise but AT&T CMS8.0 is what I use to connect to my isp -
AT&T.

Thanks

Don't know, but it's obvious to me what's causing your problems
while accessing the Windows Update homepage.

May I ask you a dumb question?
Why would you like to post to *every* site you're browsing to
that you've TaxWise and AT&T CMS8.0 installed on your machine?

You don't have to uninstall the application but remove the User Agent
entries for those applications.

Freudi
