strange screen and slow computer after update

After installing WIndows Service Pack 1 and 16 other
recommended updates, my computer is slow to start up.
Also, very noisy; sounds like the hard drive is going to
come out of the box! Getting weird "To begin click your
user name" screen at start up. Never had that before.

Any suggestions??

Take a thorough look at your case fan on this box. See if it is stuck or turning or dirty.
Most important, if you even think it is the hard drive, then you may have a very serious hardware problem, and you need to see if you can backup or image your files & data to offline media, like backup tape or to CDs.
