Strange User profile problem

Running a 32 bit Windows vista home premium for about 1.5 years now. One
day I turn it on and got an error saying "windows could not connect to
the User Profile Service service". I have only one user profile. It does
NOT say "user profile failed the logon", I have checked that thread
already.

I have tried system restore (including from safe mode), but it fails
every time for some "unidentified" reason. I have also run chkdsk, which
also did not fix the problem. Furthermore, each time I restart/re-log
in, different amounts of my profile will load, i.e. sometimes my
background, sometimes my background+some desktop icons, sometimes
nothing (temporary profile), other times everything will load.

One other thing- I also get varying color schemes each time I log on.
Sometimes I get windows aero, and other times the highest color scheme I
can get is windows standard, and the start menu looks like from windows
98.

To top things off, sometimes the error I get upon login an error with
the Group Client Service rather than the user profile one.

One last thing- Sometimes after logon I also get pop ups saying the
Remote Access Control has stopped working, and well as WLAN autoconfig.

Is it possible all of these problems stem from the same issue? I'm
thinking of backing up my files and just factory resetting this, but
looking to avoid this step if possible. Would appreciate any help on
this one.

Hi,

Have you tried selecting the Last Known Good Configuration from the boot
menu?

moice,

It could be your hard drive going bad. Copy your data off ASAP.
