I recommend following the KB315346 to repair Windows Installer, then do a
WinXP in place/upgrade reinstall to repair WMI. Once checking the system for
stability/performance, take a Restore Point. Then do Windows Update, but ONLY
install Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (which you have to anyway!). Then reboot,
recheck system. Take another Restore Point. Then Windows UPdate to get all
remaining patches EXCEPT KB902400. Retest....REstore Point etc...
