What is this ****?
together with a more normal "Security update for Windows XP (KB925486)"
(that says something about VML, I guess it's the latest tuesday-hole in
explorer)
today there was something else: (I have translated this from my language)

------------------------
Windows Genuine Advantage validating tool (KB905474)

Size: 0.9 MB

You get a message from the validating tool from Windows Genuine Advantage
if your
exemple of Windows is not authentic/real/geniune. If your system show
itself be false, you may use the tool
to buy a licensiated exemple of Windows.

More information aboute this uppdate is on following address:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=39157
------------------------

what in ***** is this? don't seems to be a securityholepatch or?
I don't have any particular inclination to install a "validating tool"
unnecessarily.
may one uncheck the checkbox and skip this without anything goes wrong?

Hi Teebo,

Just enter WGA in the searchbox and you will find plenty of information,
including all pros en cons. on this subject.
Please read it first before you do anything.

Cheers,
Ad

It's an update to WGA that was not communicated in advance.

untick the box and don't install it.

Thanks, Mom
In addition to that, put a tick in the box to Hide the update.
The WGA Notification Tool is NOT required as of yet to be able to do
updates via the Windows or Microsoft Update sites.

Not everything that comes down the WU/MU/AU pike is a security update,

Didn't MS originally say the AU would only be used for
security updates?

Not that I know of but it seems everybody thinks that's how it works:

<QP>
With the Automatic Updates feature, Windows can automatically keep the
computer up to date with the *latest updates and enhancements*. You no
longer have to search for critical updates and information; Windows delivers
them directly to the computer. Windows recognizes when you are online and
uses your Internet connection to search for downloads from the Windows
Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site. An icon appears in
the notification area every time new updates are available.

Huh? "...as of yet...". What does that mean? Now what aren't you (MS)
telling us. From all the problems I've read, it can't tell the difference
between "good" and "evil" anyhow.

What are you referring to ? Sorry to inform you, but MVPs do NOT work
for MS - http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/mvpexecsum

What problems ? What good and evil ? Please enlighten us as to what
you're ranting about.

Hi MowGreen,
Excuse me. Calm down. Inform me? I know what MVPs are and would trust
an MVP more than an MS person. That is exactly why I come to this group. I
have the most respect for MVPs and am grateful for their time and assistance.
I'm sorry if my comment/question was not clearer.
I didn't SAY you worked for MS. I wouldn't insult any MVP, let alone
calling them an employee of MS. (Especially after you, MowGreen, helped me to
get SP2 onto my computer. Thank you again). Please note I put (MS) in
parenthesis.
What I meant was, what do you know about this Windows Genuine Advantage
Notification (KB905474) or what are you--MowGreen MVP-- "or" MS not telling
us about this KB905474. Does MS have something else planned for using
this tool.
What I was referring to was your reply to Susan Bradley above when you said
"as of yet":
"MowGreen" wrote:
"In addition to that, put a tick in the box to Hide the update.

updates via the Windows or Microsoft Update sites."

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your statement.

And was not ranting. I don't waste a forum's time RANTING. Now I'm wasting
time, and yours, having to explain myself.
I was asking a question. By "Problems" I meant the 905474 can't tell the
difference between legal (good) and conterfeit (evil) copies of windows. I
have read many comments that the copy of Windows that came on people's
computers from an OEM, or legally purchased in a store, 905474 was notifying
users that their "good" copies--legal-- were NOT good--evil. I was just
calling legal, good; and illegal, evil. That's all.
Sorry, but I can't explain that any clearer.

I hope this clears this up.
Have a great day.
