That's a tricky one. I find that a font file, installed from the desktop,
without the "copy to font folder" option selected at install, is similarly
undeletable.
Go to
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ and get the free Unlocker program.
Once installed, you'll have to modify the executable's properties
(C:\Program Files\Unlocker\Unlocker.exe if you use default installation) to
allow "Run this program as an administrator" in the Compatability tab.
Right click on the font file, click the Unlocker option on the context menu,
select Delete from the actions. You should get a Voila experience!

I have a stray font file on my desktop that simply will NOT delete. It
keeps saying that it is being used by another program. But it can't be!
I downloaded this font onto my desktop, decided not to use it, and now
it will not delete.
Is there any way I can find out what program the system thinks is using it?
How can I get rid of this annoying thing?
Thanks!
