Stuck after/near end of downloading updates

I have a new notebook. It downloads the available updates but sits with the
progress bar at 100% and it wont start installing updates. So eventually I
cancel it. Also, the yellow shield icon in the system tray forever now says
"downloading updates: 98% complete". I can't figure out what's going here.
I've suspected that Norton Internet Security might have something to do with
it, but disabling that didnt seem to help. One other thing I've noticed is
that when I go to the Security Center it says that the Security Center is
currently unavailable. I checked the service and sure enough it hasnt
started. I'm assuming that has to do with Norton Internet Security too but
thought I'd mention it.

Any ideas?

Go to www.autopatcher.com and get their 137Mb file of updates.

For what it's worth I ended up going to the Downloads site at Microsoft and
downloading the specific hotfix that I needed (KB885836 I think it was). I
was able to run it no problem this way. The other non-hotfix updates (4 of
them) I'm not especially interested in anyway. I'll be watching to see if
this is a repeating problem or somehow related to this specific hotfix.
