stuck on "checking for latest version..."

I am trying to get all updates on a newly reloaded windows xp system.

When I access windows updates, it never goes past the page where the top
reads "Checking for the latest version of the Windows update software..."

I updated to sp2 by disk, but would like to get the rest of updates on as
well.

Hi vintonrj,

Give this a try and see if it resolves the problem.........

Go to Start>Run and key in:
net.exe stop wuauserv
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wups.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

Start>Run and key in:
net.exe start wuauserv

Now try the Windows Update site.

Hi Patti,

Thanks for the help. I had this same problem today and I ran through your
steps. Now it's working beautifully.

Thanks again!

Patti, the "net.exe stop wuauserv" and "net.exe start wuauserv" commands
result, for me, in the message "Error 2185 The service name is invalid."
Now what do I do? Thanks, Charles

Hi Charles,

What operating system are you using? It's a bad habit of mine, since I
normally haunt the microsoft.public.windowsxp newsgroups, to forget that the
windowsupdate newsgroup is not "exclusive" to the XP operating
system........sorry.

Are you using any third-party firewalls (ZoneAlarm or Norton Personal
Firewall, for example), ad blocking or spyware blocking software ? If so,
try disabling the program before attempting to access Windows Update.

Patti, thanks -- I am using Windows 98 and Norton Internet Security
(including Norton Personal Firewall). Disabling NIS and allowing pop-ups did
not resolve my problem. What do I do now? Many thanks, Charles

Try running thru the items in the "checklist" provided by Maurice N in this
thread:

Since the above URL will wrap due to its length, either copy/paste the
entire URL into a browser window, or use this TinyURL:

Maurice's post is the seventh one in that thread.
