I can't run Windows Update. The browser just stays at "Checking for latest
version of the Windows Update software.." and goes no further.

I had this problem on Windows XP SP1. I have now installed SP2 (from the
network download) and the problem persists... I still can't run Windows
update.

Is there a fix for this?

my entire system.

ISSUE: Win update won't go past "Checking for software" message (NO
error messages at all ever came up)

System: XPPro/SP2

After trying a ton of "solutions" nothing worked..... Although I was NOT
getting any error messages, I decided to go through some of the "fixes"
listed for error messages. When I tried Option # 2 on the
0x80248011troubleshoot page, Viola! My Win update now works!! No issues
having Norton AV or Zone Alarm installed (added win update to ZA approve
list).

-----------------------------------------------
*****Step 2 for "0x80248011 error" *****

2. Delete the datastore and allow it to rebuild itself. First stop the
Automatic Update Service
1.. Click Start.
2.. Choose Run.
3.. In the Run box, type services.msc.
4.. Click OK.
5.. Right-click the Automatic Updates Service.
6.. Click Stop.
After Stopping the Service please rename the folder
c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
1.. Open Windows Explorer
2.. Navigate to the Windows folder
3.. Click on the + next to the Windows folder
4.. Navigate to SoftwareDistribution folder
5.. Right Click on the SoftwareDistribution folder
6.. Select rename from the Menu
7.. Rename the folder to SoftwareDistribution.old and click Enter
Now restart the Automatic Update Service
1.. Click Start.
2.. Choose Run.
3.. In the Run box, type services.msc.
4.. Click OK.
5.. Right-click the Automatic Updates Service.
6.. Click Start.

Thanks, but I'm afraid this didn't work for me. I am on SP2 now, but I
noticed this problem prior to installing SP2, FWIW.

Still hoping to find a solution. Thanks again.

FIXED
This was suggested to fix the problem. It worked!

At command prompt type each of these commands and look for "success"
indication:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
