With Index of 2.7, this Vista Business laptop suddenly
went from full-blown Aero to the old W95 view. I had
installed and then uninstalled an application, but
didn't expect it to affect video. There's no virus or
other malware, and the unit is very solid in all other
respects.

No option in THEMES, APPEARANCE SETTINGS, etc. mentions
Aero or permits recovery. Where should I begin looking?

Thanks!

What was the application you installed/uninstalled? Perhaps you should try a
System Restore to before you did this.

The app was Battery Tracker.

I've done a Restore - no help. This is mysterious.

Use f8, and try starting up to last known good configuration if you can
reverse what happened using the standard control-panel panes.

Thanks -- got it, but I had to go back several days. I
have no clue what caused this.

I had this happen to me after a windows update a few days ago. I got a
message about some service not working and my display looked a lot like
Windows 2000.
A suspect that the system was busy after first rebooting and I logged on to
quickly, not giving the system enough time to initialize.

Anyway, I simply rebooted and every thing has been fine since.

Actually, it doesn't "initialize" UNTIL you logon.

Its still doing something before I log on. My system is set to show a list
of users after a reboot. I am pretty sure that it starts to run services
before I have logged on.

Check your Windows Themes service is running, and then run the Windows
Experience Index Rating, get it to re-rate your system
This has fixed it for me before. If you are on a laptop, make sure you put
it into the high performance power profile before running the index.

It doesn't know which services to run until a user logs on.
That's the case even if it's only one user.
