I rebooted my laoptop this morning and it rebooted to "Please do not power
off or unplug your machine. Installalling updates 1 of 7". It's been stuck
like this for several hours. I've pressed the power button (didn't have to
hold it down) and it rebooted back up to the same screen. I did this twice
but am afraid to try anything too drastic.

I can't afford to have it be down all day and I'm geting impatient. Any
suggestions?

Is the system still in the state that you posted .. i.e. installing 1 of
7 updates ?
If not, boot to Safe Mode as the update service will not run in SM.
Then post the WindowsUpdate.log by going to Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
Copy and paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply IF the system is
still stuck, please.
