Stuck on Update 2 of 2

My wife has set XP to update Windows automatically. Last night, she was
shutting down and XP said it was updating her computer and would shut down
automatically. This morning, her computer was still running and stuck on a
screen which said, ""Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn
off automstically. Installing update 2 of 2..."

I've got my laptop set to alert me of updates. I went to work and
downloaded and installed the latest updates, but now it's stuck on
"Installing Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2005
(KB890830) (update 2 of 2)..."

My wife hasn't shut down her computer yet and I haven't canceled out of the
update window on my laptop.

Any suggestions?

Hope someone can help, as I'm having similar problems - plus I now can't
install any updates

Hi;

Tell your wife to shut down her computer, count slowly to 15, then turn
it back on. I'm guessing that something went wrong during the update
process. It could be that the MS system went down or the connection was
temporarily lost during the update process, altho that's just a guess.

Once she has the computer restarted, have her go to the MS Update
website and do a Custom scan. Then she should select one Critical
update at a time; install that one; then scan again. Repeat that until
all updates offered are installed.

IF she encounters errors during that process, have her write down the
error number shown on the screen or in the WindowsUpdate.LOG file and
post back here with those error results.

This happened to all my machines.. there is something wrong with the
Malicious Software tool update... After this update is installed the CPU will
go to 100% and the process that is doing it is the Malicious Software tool..
(I forget the exact process name.)

I am trying to get it to work properly on one machine without success, on my
other machines I had to Restore the system back to yesterday to get the
machine to work properly.

Looks to me like there is a problem with this update.

As a trial, I removed the Windows Installer and replaced it with the latest
version "V2" from the download site. Seems to have worked as I was able to
update my machine. However, I have NOT yet installed the Malicious Software
tool update because there are too many references to it on these pages. I'll
wait until I'm sure it's OK !!

i had the same problem. Install 2 just stopped installing; cpu usage went to
100% and all programs slowed. I quit all programs but update still did not
finish installing. After forced restart - automatic update shows no updates
needed and "Review your update history" online, it shows this portion failed
- but the "Failed Icon" one is supposed to click to learn how to resolve the
problem does not link to any web pages. How sad to see no resolutions here
either....

Yes. Look in your WindowsUpdate.log to see what is happening.

E.g., is it installing or still downloading?

There have been cases of loops during downloading
(perhaps due to packaging problems) which might be avoided by
getting prompted for the download and doing one at a time.
More simply it could also be that the servers are busy
and you could just try again later.

Another useful diagnostic especially for a downloading phase
is (e.g., from a cmd window):

bitsadmin /monitor /allusers

E.g. a loop in the packaging could be dramatically evident that way.

FYI bitsadmin is available on the Support Tools and an update
to it for XPsp2 may also be available by download:

<title>KB838079 - Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools</title>

If it is actually in an install phase don't forget to check any
install logs. Since the names of these logs are often obscure
what I do is a search for all files changed on that date,
sorted by Date Modified; then you can narrow it down even further
to the minutes that the update was running. Also I would use
Task Manager's Processes tab to find out exactly what was
still running. Etc.
