Stuck in the "Updates 3 of 3" Reboot Loop after Service Pack 1

Hi,

Trying to fix the mother-in-law's notebook (no jokes, please). Notebook is
stuck in a loop where it notifies that it's installing Update 3 of 3. It
finishes, momentarily shows the user avatar/login screen, and then
immediately reboots. Repeats the process again and again.

I googled it and saw several problems noted in the Spring of 2008 related to
installation of SP1; I assume that's what this is, too. I tried booting from
the Vista Install CD and tried to restore the system from a previous point.
Tried numerous different dates, and none of them worked (immediately got
notice that the process couldn't go forward).

Is there anyone who knows how to fix this one? Thanks.

Right at Power on/Startup tap F8, and see if you get into a list of Startup
options.
Choose Safe mode, and hit Enter.
When in there, uninstall Vistra SP1, and then check at Microsoft site to see
leadup preparation work,(driver compatibility, etc) before installing SP1.

If you can not uninstall, do a System Restore while in there.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Mick,

Thanks for the reply. Problem is I can't go into Safe Mode. I tried that,
and it puts me into that "Updating 3 of 3" loop.

The install CD has the option of restoring from a previous point, but it
doesn't work, either.

Help! Is re-installing Vista the only option?

Possibly. You might want to back up her data at this point if it wasn't and
