I think you got it right. Many motherboards will not perform to spec with 4
ram modules. Go into the BIOS and look for ram settings. You can either
manually specify a lower-than-default speed (e.g., set your 800MHZ ram to
run at 667 MHz) or increase the voltage (only safe if your ram specs allow
higher-than-default voltage). I run my 800 MHz ram at 667 MHz and have never
had any stability problems since making the adjustment.
I ran some memory subsystem benchmarks with ram at 800 MHz and at 667 MHz.
On a 1333 MHz cpu bus, there was very little difference in memory
performance. Apparently running synchronously (667 MHz is exactly half the
1333 MHz bus speed) offers an improvement that offsets the slower timing.
