Subject: Update KB890830 - will not install

When shutting computer down at night windows show that it is installing
update and telling us not to power off. When get up the next day it is still
showing same message and the only way to use the computer is by unplugging
the machine. Is there any fix to this problem?

I'm running Vista SP1, I tried to downlaod and install the update manually,
this seem to work but after I was done, windows update poped up saying that
update (KB8990830) was ready to be installed and when I click to install the
update it started then froze.

Have you been noticing other, unusual problems (e.g., unwanted pop-ups or
Search misdirects)?

Have any other recent updates failed to install? Are you able to run
Windows Update manually?

Is "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB961260)" listed in
Installed Updates?

Does Windows Security Center report "all green" for firewall, automatic
updates, malware protection, and other security settings? See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ty-center.aspx

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Run Windows Update manually and "hide" KB890830: Click View available
updates | Right-click on the update you wish to hide (i.e., KB890830) |
Click 'Hide Update' | Confirm the UAC (User Account Control) if appropriate.

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

If AU continues to offer the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) and it
still fails to install (run), let me know.

NB: An updated version of the MSRT is released every month. Hiding KB890830
now will NOT have the affect of hiding the updated version MS is planning to
release on 10 Mar-09.

Comment: Part of the current problem could be that the version of the MSRT
released on 10 Feb-09 was replaced by a newer version on 12 Feb-09. Since
you've managed to download/run the 12 Feb-09 version manually, I wouldn't
worry about it.

And Maintenance (If you are using Classic View, skip this step) | Windows
Update | Restore Hidden Updates | Find and select the update you wish to
install | Restore. You can now reselect it and install through the normal
process.

Thank you for your response, by hidng the update(KB890830) it allowed me to
install another update that had failed yesturday and was able to shut down my
computor normally. When you asked me to open the Download folder and delete
it's contents, there was a folder called Install and a few files in the
Download folder, in the Install folder was the MSRT dated (yesturday) the day
I downloaded that file manually, I did not delete the MSRT file or Install
folder but deleted the other files in the Download folder.
What is the reason for deleting the files and should I have deleted the
Install folder with the MSRT file ?
Do I need to unhide the MSRT update in windows update ?

Just delete everything in C:\Windows\System Distribution\Download <=this
folder. Doing so will not and cannot hurt anything at all. (Over time, the
contents will be deleted automatically anyway.)

You do not need to unhide the MSRT update. See the comment in my previous
reply, Stephen.
